The best sunset spots in Uluwatu, with real drive times.

Seven places on the west side of the Bukit, and the one rule that makes them work.

Watching the sun drop into the Indian Ocean is the one plan almost every visitor to the Bukit makes, and it is a good one. This guide to the best sunset spots in Uluwatu covers seven places on the west side of the peninsula, with the drive time from our villa in Kutuh and an honest note on each. The short version: the sunset belongs to the west side, and so does the late-afternoon traffic.

Kutuh sits in the middle of the Bukit, so every spot below is a drive rather than a walk. Most disappointing sunsets in Uluwatu are not about the weather; they are about arriving twenty minutes late, stuck behind everyone who had the same idea.

About the drive times. Every time in this guide was checked on Google Maps on 17 October 2026 from the villa, as Google's typical range for a weekday. Where a second range is given, it is for leaving at four in the afternoon. Weekends, temple ceremonies and the high season can add time. Rock Bar details were checked on its own booking page on 22 October 2026.

The one rule: leave by four

The roads to the west coast narrow as they get close to the cliffs, and in the hour before sunset a lot of cars are heading the same way. Google's own ranges show it: the drive to Uluwatu Temple that takes 24 to 45 minutes in the morning stretches to 26 to 55 minutes at four in the afternoon. Leaving the villa by four gives you time to park, walk in, find a good place and settle before the light starts to change.

Uluwatu Temple

About 24 to 45 minutes, 12.0 km, or 26 to 55 minutes leaving at four. Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands on the clifftop at the south-west tip of the Bukit, and the view from the cliff path as the sun goes down is the classic Uluwatu sunset. The Kecak fire dance is performed at sunset in the amphitheatre beside the temple. Check the performance time and how tickets are sold on the day, and give yourself extra margin if you want a seat.

The temple is a place of worship, so dress with respect and follow what the staff at the entrance ask. And the macaques here are known for snatching sunglasses, hats and phones, so leave loose things in the car and keep the rest held close.

Karang Boma Cliff

About 28 to 45 minutes, 12.4 km. Close to the temple, Karang Boma is a clifftop viewpoint with a long view along the limestone cliffs. It is a quieter sunset than the temple: no performance, no bar, just the cliffs and the sea. Stay well back from the edge, take water, and keep an eye on the time so you are not walking back to the car in full darkness.

Single Fin

About 30 to 50 minutes, 13.8 km, or 35 minutes to an hour leaving at four. Single Fin is a bar and restaurant on the cliff above Suluban, looking straight over the Uluwatu surf break. At sunset you get the sky and the surfers at the same time, riding the last waves of the day below you. It is the longest drive on this list in the late afternoon, so this is the one to leave for earliest.

El Kabron

About 26 to 45 minutes, 11.0 km. El Kabron is a Spanish restaurant and pool club on the Pecatu cliffs, and sunset is its best known hour. It suits a slower evening: an early dinner timed so the main course arrives as the sky turns. Contact the restaurant ahead about a table if you want one with the view, especially in the busy months.

Rock Bar

About 24 to 40 minutes, 9.2 km. Rock Bar is built on the rocks just above the waves at the AYANA resort in Jimbaran, and it is one of the best known sunset bars in Bali. Its own booking page says walk-in guests can still come for sunset, with a recommendation to arrive early because seating is limited, and that sunset reservations are open to guests from outside the resort too. Smart attire is required, swimwear and singlets are not allowed, backpacks are not permitted, and the bar may close without notice in bad weather or when it is full. Check the page before you go.

Jimbaran Bay

About 18 to 35 minutes, 8.3 km, or 22 to 45 minutes leaving at four. The long, sheltered bay at Jimbaran faces west, and at sunset the sand fills with tables for seafood dinners, with fishing boats pulled up at one end. It is the easiest sunset on this list for families and first-timers: no stairs, no cliff paths, just a table on the sand. Go early to choose a table at the front, and confirm how your seafood is charged before you order.

Balangan Beach

About 24 to 35 minutes, 10.2 km. Balangan is a long west-facing beach under a green headland, with warungs along the sand and surfers out on the reef. There is reef underfoot at low tide, so reef shoes help if you want to walk at the water's edge.

Which one to choose

For a first evening in Uluwatu, the temple and the Kecak are hard to beat. For a sunset with dinner, Jimbaran Bay or El Kabron. For a drink with a famous view, Rock Bar or Single Fin. For a quiet hour without a crowd, Karang Boma or Balangan. If you want to turn a sunset into a full evening of music, our guide to the best beach clubs in Uluwatu covers the clubs along this coast, and our page on staying near Uluwatu Temple has more on the temple side of the Bukit.
