White cliffs, clear water and room on the sand, if you arrive before nine.
Melasti is one of the beaches we recommend most often to our guests. It sits just across the hill from Kutuh, the white cliffs drop straight to the sand, and on a calm morning the water is about as clear as it gets on the Bukit. This Melasti Beach Uluwatu guide is written from our villa, about 12 to 18 minutes away, and it has one main piece of advice: go early.
Melasti has become one of the best known beaches in the south of Bali, and it is easy to see why. That popularity is also the reason timing matters. Below is how we would plan a morning there, what to expect on the way down, and what is on the sand once you arrive.
About 12 to 18 minutes, 5.4 km. Melasti is in Ungasan, the village next door to Kutuh. From the villa the route runs along the village roads and then down Jalan Melasti toward the coast. In the late afternoon Google's range stretches a little, to about 12 to 20 minutes, which is still one of the shortest beach drives we can offer.
A car with a driver is the easiest way to go. The Bukit's roads are narrow and hilly with little shade, and parking near the beach is busiest exactly when you would want it.
The last part of the drive is the reason many people come. The road to the sand has been cut down through the limestone, so you descend between pale walls of rock before the sea opens up in front of you. It is a dramatic few minutes, and it explains the number of people stopping for photos along the way.
If you want a picture, ask your driver to pull in where it is safe. This is a working road with cars and scooters on it, not a viewing deck, and the best views are usually from the sand looking back up anyway.
Before nine, Melasti is a different beach. The light is soft on the white cliffs, the sand is still cool, and there is room to choose your spot. By late morning, and especially at weekends and on public holidays, tour groups and day trippers arrive and the main stretch fills up.
Midday is the hardest time to enjoy it: crowded, bright and hot, with the sun reflecting off the pale rock. In the later afternoon the cliffs block the sun on parts of the sand, which some people like for the shade and others dislike because the beach loses its glow. If you want sun on your towel, mornings win again.
Melasti is calmer and clearer than many of the beaches on the Bukit, which is a big part of its appeal. That does not make it a pool. Conditions change with the tide and the swell, so look at the water before you go in, swim where others are swimming, and stay out when the sea is rough. Keep young children close to the shore.
Bring water, sun protection and something to sit on. The sun here is strong from early in the day, and the white sand and cliffs make it feel stronger.
Two clubs sit on Melasti itself, and they suit different people. Palmilla is a relaxed, palm-lined club on the sand, about 14 to 20 minutes from the villa, a good choice for couples who want a slow afternoon with somewhere to sit. Tropical Temptation, about 12 to 18 minutes away, is listed on Google as an adults-only beach club, so it is one for couples rather than families.
Our suggestion is to keep the two halves of the day separate. Have the beach to yourself in the morning, go home for lunch and a swim in your own pool, and come back to a club in the late afternoon if you want music and a drink. In high season, contact the club ahead about day beds. For a wider comparison of clubs on the Bukit, see our guide to the best beach clubs in Uluwatu.
Busy days happen, and there are good alternatives nearby. Pandawa, Kutuh's own beach, is about 9 to 12 minutes from the villa and is long enough to find space if you walk away from the entrance; our Pandawa Beach guide has the details. Green Bowl, about 9 to 10 minutes away, is a small, quiet cove at the bottom of a long flight of steps, better for fit couples than for small children.
Leave the villa at eight. Take the road down through the cliffs and you are on the sand well before nine. Swim while the water is calm and the beach is quiet, and head home as the crowds and the heat arrive. A late breakfast by the pool, a rest through the middle of the day, and the evening is yours. Our page on staying near Melasti Beach has more on how the villa fits around it.
